Easter Concert 2010
On the Saturday before Holy Week the choir gave
a magical performance in aid
of Parkinson's UK in St. Mary's Church, Welshpool. The rendition of
'Sacred Songs' by Karl Jenkins held the audience spellbound as the
final 'In Paradisum' came to a close. The work is a group of seven
pieces from his most popular choral works. including the very moving
'And The Mother Did Weep' from the 'Stabat Mater' and was particularly
appreciated as we went into Holy Week.
The Concert was given to raise money for the Montgomeryshire Branch of
Parkinson's UK, the charity which supports people with Parkinson's
Disease and funds research into the disease. After the interval the
Chairman of the Branch, Glyn Davies, gave a short talk about the work
of the society.
Joining the choir were soloists Kate Griffith (Soprano) and Christopher
Barnes (Tenor), who delighted the audience with pieces from Haydn's
'Creation' in the first part of the concert. This was followed by the
choir singing the well-known chorus 'The Heavens Are Telling' in which
Kate and Christopher joined the choir. After the interval, during which
choir and audience chatted over a glass of wine, Kate and the choir
sang the much-loved 'Hear My Prayer' by Mendelssohn with Kate soaring
over the choir in 'O For The Wings Of A Dove'. She then gave a stunning
performance of 'The Jewel Song' from Gounod's 'Faust', which was
followed by Handel's 'Where'er You Walk' from the opera 'Semele', yet
another treat for the audience from Christopher Barnes. The evening was
rounded off with a sparkling performance of the verse anthem 'Ascribe
Unto The Lord' by Samuel Wesley.
The accompanist throughout the evening, on organ and piano, was Tim
Stuart, a consummate musician and a favourite with the choir for some
years now. His excellence in such a variety of work was greatly
appreciated by audience and performers alike. Guilsfield Singers
chairman, Diana Gerret, said after the concert: "The choir loves
singing to an appreciative audience. I have received many very
complimentary comments and I think this evening's concert will be
remembered for a long time.

Guilsfield Singers Bring Christmas
Cheer
Children from Guilsfield School joined the
Guilsfield Singers on Wednesday evening [16 December] to bring Christmas cheer
to their audience in St Aelhaiarn’s Church with a programme of carols and other
songs. At the request of the Reverend Roger Bird,
the children repeated their favourite song – ‘Run Rudolf Run’, accompanied by
some well-rehearsed choreography. They
also sang ‘Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas’, and joined the choir for
three carols, including ‘I Saw Three Ships’ to a very cheerful new tune.
The audience were treated to mulled wine
and mince pies after the concert, provided by the ladies of the church. The performance brought to an end the
Guilsfield Singers’ concerts for this Christmas, following celebrations at
Selattyn on 5 December and at Llanfechain on 12 December, where they helped the
local community celebrate the dedication of their brand new Memorial Hall. This proved to be a splendid venue for the
choir, who received a great deal of praise from their audience. The choir was accompanied on the piano and
organ for all three concerts by Joan Upton-Holder and by their regular
rehearsal accompanist, Pam Yapp. The
conductor was Musical Director Gerry Howe.Rehearsals start on Wednesday 6 January
for the Easter Concert in St Mary’s Church in Welshpool on 27 March, which will
include a compilation from his own works by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.
